Step Back in Time: Discover the Hidden Charm of Karahori Shopping Street

Tucked away from the bustling tourist hubs of Osaka lies a tranquil gem that embodies the spirit of old Osaka—Karahori Shopping Street. Our classroom is nestled in this serene area near Tanimachi 6-chome Station, offering a unique and authentic experience for those looking to explore the city’s rich history.

Unlike the crowded streets of Shinsaibashi or the lively Kuromon Market, Karahori Shopping Street remains a cherished spot for locals, providing a rare glimpse into a time when life moved at a slower, more thoughtful pace. Spared from the destruction of wartime and untouched by the rapid development during the bubble economy, this historic shopping street is lined with beautiful retro houses and shops that date back to the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.

Affectionately known as "Taniroku," this area holds a special place in the hearts of Osaka residents. As you stroll down the approximately 800-meter stretch from Uemachi-suji on the east side, crossing Tanimachi-suji, to Matsuya-machi-suji on the west side, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

The name "Karahori" is steeped in history, derived from the "Minami So-gamae-bori," an outer moat of Osaka Castle, which was once a "karabori" or dry moat. This historical connection only adds to the charm and significance of the area.

Whether you’re here for a calligraphy or emoji class, or simply to explore, Karahori Shopping Street offers an enchanting escape from the modern world. Come and immerse yourself in the nostalgic atmosphere of "Taniroku," where every corner tells a story of Osaka’s past.
