Meet Mako: The Emoji Artist Bringing Happiness to Life
Today, we introduce the talented emoji artist, Mako!
Born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Mako now lives with her middle school son and a 2-year-old male cat. At 18, she moved to Kyoto to attend university. After working in the apparel and travel industries, she opened a snack bar in 1999. Despite being a novice, her unconventional approach to the bar business captivated the hearts of salarymen, making it a popular spot.
After enjoying her 30s, Mako gave birth just before turning 40. Due to various circumstances, she became a single mother. Despite struggling with her "poor handwriting" complex, she discovered the world of "Happiness Emojis" and began learning calligraphy. As she practiced more, her love for writing grew, eventually leading her to become an instructor.
She moved her business to a traditional townhouse in Karahori Shopping Street near Tanimachi 6-chome and transformed her snack bar into a shot bar. The first floor became the bar, while the second floor became a calligraphy classroom. Around this time, Mako also began writing novels. This year, she received an honorable mention for a short story. Her bar has evolved into a gathering place for those who love alcohol, literature, and calligraphy.
Mako is currently running a lively and enjoyable space where she blends drinks, literature, and calligraphy. She hopes her handwritten words and happy messages can bring a little joy to everyone's hearts.
